START (Screening Tool to Alert doctors to the Right Treatment)
STOPP (Screening Tool of Older People’s potentially inappropriate Prescriptions)
Provides explicit, evidence based rules of avoidance of commonly encountered instances of potentially inappropriate prescribing and potential prescribing omissions.
While there is no convincing evidence that using the START/STOPP criteria reduces morbidity, mortality, or cost; these lists can be used to identify red flags that might require intervention. They should not be considered the final word on medication appropriateness.
